What are the advantages and disadvantages of kiln clay bricks?

Kiln clay bricks are one of the commonly used refractory materials in kilns. Due to their abundant raw material sources, good performance, and moderate cost, they are widely used in the lining of various industrial kilns. The following is an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of clay bricks in kiln use:

Advantages of kiln clay bricks

  • Clay bricks are weakly acidic at high temperatures, and their ability to resist alkaline slag erosion is slightly poor, but it increases with the increase of Al2O3 content. The thermal stability is better than that of silica bricks and magnesium bricks.
  • Qualified clay bricks are vacuum impregnated with phosphoric acid after drying, and then fired at low temperature for the second time. Phosphoric acid-impregnated products can be used to build the upper lining of the blast furnace.
  • Clay bricks are made from local materials, are cheap, durable, and have the advantages of fireproofing, heat insulation, sound insulation, and moisture absorption. They are widely used in civil engineering projects. Waste bricks can also be used as aggregates for concrete.
  • Fly ash clay bricks are made of fly ash as the main raw material, mixed with cementing materials such as coal gangue powder or clay, and are made of refractory materials through batching, molding, drying, and roasting. They can make full use of industrial waste slag and save fuel.

Disadvantages of clay refractory bricks

  1. Heavyweight. Clay bricks are heavier than other wall masonry materials, which requires the structure to bear a larger weight and increases the project cost;
  2. Poor sound insulation. When sound is transmitted to clay bricks, due to their small porosity, the sound is not isolated and the decibel reduction is very small. Other masonry materials, such as the concrete aerated blocks that are now widely used, have a larger porosity and obvious sound insulation effect;
  3. Great environmental damage. Since clay bricks are mainly made by sintering excavated soil, they damage the soil and vegetation, causing soil erosion and serious damage to the environment.
